Sclerotherapy is an injection technique that helps eliminate unsightly and sometimes painful veins.
What is sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is an injection technique that helps eliminate unsightly and sometimes painful veins. Sclerotherapy can address tiny little spider veins, known as telangiectasias, to varicose veins that can be so large, they can easily be felt.
How sclerotherapy works
By injecting a sclerosing agent directly into the veins, sclerotherapy disrupts the venous walls causing the veins to collapse and be reabsorbed into your own system. Your body then naturally identifies alternate veins for blood to be rerouted through in your venous system.
What to expect during your appointment
Before we begin the actual procedure, we will discuss exactly which veins can and cannot be treated. If a vein is too large, deep or necessary, we will avoid them, and referrals to a vascular surgeon may be recommended. Injections take precision and blocks of time in which the patient must lay still. We will adjust the bed accordingly to make the treatment as comfortable as possible. You may feel slight pricks and a mild stinging sensation as we puncture the vein and inject the solution. It will take anywhere from 15-45 minutes depending on the amount of veins treated.
Length of results
Appropriately treated veins typically have permanent results. However, new veins may develop in the same area and eventually require treatment. You should wait at least 6 weeks before getting another sclerotherapy procedure. Some veins may take 2-3 treatments to achieve maximum results.
