Chemical Peels
Chemical peels are procedures in which a solution is applied to the skin to slough off skin cells.
What are chemical peels?
Chemical Peels are procedures in which a solution is applied to the skin to slough off skin cells. The regenerated skin underneath has a smoother texture and is more even in skin tone. There are many different types of chemical peels in a variety of strengths. Some chemical peels are mild and have no downtime, while others are stronger and may require several weeks of downtime. Chemical peels can be performed on all body parts.
How chemical peels work
Chemicals peels use a solution, generally in the form of liquid acid, to alter the pH balance of the skin. This change loosens the binding that adheres skin cells together. As a result, the cells are sloughed off, revealing fresh new skin underneath.
What to expect during your appointment
After thoroughly cleansing the skin, we will determine whether dermaplaning is necessary. Sometimes a degreasing agent is used to further cleanse the skin of oil and debris. We apply the peel with light strokes, sometimes doing multiple passes. As the solution begins to penetrate, you may experience a tingling sensation ranging from mild to intense depending on the strength of the peel. An application of soothing creams and sunscreen will complete the treatment. The entire procedure takes about 15-30 minutes.
Length of results
After the post-peel flaking, many patients will comment that their skin feels smoother and looks brighter. Although you will likely see a difference after just one treatment, a series of 3-6 peels is ideal for maximum results. For patients who have more severe signs of aging, multiple treatments are recommended.
