Hair Removal

Hair removal has long been one of the most sought after cosmetic procedures. Its proven efficacy has made it a popular procedure for all ages and skin types. After completing a series of treatments, hair growth is significantly reduced. IPL hair removal is also perfect for people who suffer from razor burns after they shave and is also great in treating ingrown hairs and folliculitis.

How It Works

IPL hair removal uses light and heat to reduce hair growth. Light travels harmlessly through the skin until it hits the hair follicle, where most of the melanin (or color) is. The light is converted to heat energy which essentially destroys the follicle as well as most of the hair shaft. The dead hair is pushed to the surface of the skin and eventually falls out after 1-3 weeks.

What To Expect

We start by having you lie down comfortably before applying a thin layer of conductive lotion in the areas to be treated. You will see flashes of light as the treatment begins. Most people say they occasionally feel a mild snapping sensation, especially in extremely sensitive sections or over a bony area. After we are done, you will have an opportunity to wipe away any excess lotion and apply a rich, soothing moisturizer or calming hydrocortisone cream. Procedure time depends on how large of an area we are treating.

Length Of Results

This varies greatly depending on what areas we are treating and how many sessions you have already completed. In the first few sessions, hairs will usually take 3-4 weeks before starting a new growth cycle. The more treatments you have already had, the longer the time between sessions will be.

Number Of Treatments

It is important to come in every 4-6 weeks, especially for the first few treatments. This will ensure the most effective, long-lasting results. Patients need at least 6-8 treatments to see a significant reduction in hair. Once-a-year touch-ups are necessary for maintenance.

IPL Photofacial

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. Photofacials are not technically lasers; they use a broad-based light as opposed to a single wavelength that lasers use. Because of this wide spectrum of light, IPL is able to treat many different conditions. It can improve pigmentation caused by sun damage, freckles, age, and even scarring. It can also help with redness issues such as rosacea, blood vessels, and flushing.

How It Works

IPL photofacials uses light and heat energy to target particular areas of the skin. Initially, light is introduced to the skin in many wavelengths. As it penetrates the skin, that light is converted to heat. The heat is strong enough to damage specific chromophores (parts of the skin that absorbs light). Those chromophores are related to certain skin conditions such as unwanted pigmentation or facial veins, thereby destroying them.

What To Expect

We start by removing all makeup and lotions from the skin. If you choose, we may perform a microdermabrasion prior to the IPL treatment. This helps to exfoliate the skin using gentle scraping and suctioning. The actual photofacial follows. Even with goggles covering your eyes, you will still see flashes of light. You may also experience a snapping feeling with each light pulse. You can follow up your IPL with an oxygen facial using their brightening serum to achieve even better results. The treatment ends with a light massage and sunscreen application. Depending on the add-ons, the procedure can take between 30-90 minutes.

Length Of Results

As with most treatments, results are dependent on the patient’s lifestyle, skin type, and how many sessions they have already received. For the first few treatments, results may last 1-3 months (longer if sun exposure is avoided). After a series is completed, some people can wait a year or more before needing another procedure.

Number Of Treatments

Patients usually need a series of 3-5 sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart for best results. Although it may sound counterintuitive, people with lighter brown spots need more sessions than people with darker spots.

Photodynamic Therapy

Years of sun exposure can lead to severe damage of the skin. From darkening brown spots to precancerous lesions, treating these conditions can take months and many visits to the office. The addition of Levulan® to a photofacial is called photodynamic therapy or PDT. Levulan intensifies the IPL treatment and can produce significant results in a shorter amount of time. This is an ideal treatment for people with years of sun damage, acneic skin, or widespread actinic lesions.

How It Works

Levulan, or ALA, is a photosensitizing agent. After it is absorbed by the skin for a certain amount of time, a photofacial is performed. Light from the IPL activates the drug. It works on three levels: inactivates the bacteria that causes acne, shuts down the glands that create sebum, and exfoliates the skin and unclogs pores. Together, these actions help to improve skin and can even potentially help in preventing skin cancer.

What To Expect

Once your skin is cleansed, we will perform a light microdermabrasion on the areas to be treated. Skin will be lightly exfoliated using a custom bristle tip and vacuum. Next, the Levulan is carefully painted onto the skin. It is left on the treated area anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes. Patients can spend this time reading, catching up on emails and phone calls, or even take a well-deserved nap. 20 minutes before the IPL treatment, we will apply numbing cream over the levulan. After thoroughly cleansing the skin again, we will perform the IPL portion of the procedure. Because levulan makes skin sensitive to light, you will feel a mild to moderate burning sensation. This should start to subside immediately after the IPL treatment. We will place a cool, hydrating mask to facilitate the process. A liberal application of sunscreen will conclude the procedure. Because the levulan incubation period varies, this treatment can take anywhere from 1-2 hours.

Length Of Results

After the first treatment, you will see a difference that should last for a few months. Results may last even longer after a few more sessions and by following post-care instructions carefully.

Number Of Treatments

Because of the intensity Levulan brings to the treatment, only 1-3 sessions are typically necessary. However, if you have severe sun damage, more treatments will improve your skin even further.

Fractionated Laser Skin Resurfacing

Skin resurfacing is a broad term that means enhancing the texture and appearance of the skin using a controlled type of injury. Using a laser, we can pinpoint the specific desired wavelength to achieve your results. Our non-ablative laser uses microscopic beams that penetrate the skin to the dermis. This ensures improved superficial changes as well as deep collagen remodeling.

How It Works

The 1540-nm wavelength is scientifically proven to be an optimal setting for skin resurfacing. The laser shoots tiny beams onto the skin, creating microscopic holes in the skin. The laser penetrates deep enough to heat collagen found in the dermis. This allows the collagen to rebuild itself and subsequently tightens your skin as a result. On the surface, new epidermal cells are formed which translates to smoother texture, softened wrinkles, and a brighter, clearer complexion.

What To Expect

We start by cleansing the skin of any surface debris and makeup. Dermaplaning and a microdermabrasion before the laser procedure are highly recommended. This allows the skin to be properly exfoliated so that the light beam can penetrate evenly and deeply for better results. We numb the skin using prescription cream for at least 20-30 minutes. Once the skin is cleansed again, we will start the laser resurfacing. The laser feels like a quick, hot prick. Sensations may increase with multiple passes or around the eyes and over bony areas. You will experience heat much like a sunburn after your treatment. We will administer a cool, collagen-building mask to lessen the sensation and finish with an application of sunscreen. Depending on if we dermaplane or use micordermbrasion, the treatment could last between 45-90 minutes.

Length Of Results

After a series of at least 5 sessions, patients can typically go 6-12 months without needing another treatment. If proper anti-aging products are used along with occasional chemical peels, the results can last even longer.

Number Of Treatments

A series of 4-6 treatments is recommended for maximum results. Patients usually schedule the sessions 6-8 weeks apart. More treatments are necessary to treat deeper wrinkles and more severe sun damage.
