Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are procedures in which a solution is applied to the skin to slough off skin cells.

What are chemical peels?

Chemical peels are procedures in which a solution is applied to the skin to slough off skin cells. The regenerated skin underneath has a smoother texture and is more even in skin tone. There are many different types of chemical peels in a variety of strengths. Some chemical peels are mild and have no downtime, while others are stronger and may require several weeks of downtime. Chemical peels can be performed on all body parts.

Chemicals peels use a solution, generally in the form of liquid acid, to alter the pH balance of the skin. This change loosens the binding that adheres skin cells together. As a result, the cells are sloughed off, revealing fresh new skin underneath.

After thoroughly cleansing the skin, we will determine whether dermaplaning is necessary. Sometimes a degreasing agent is used to further cleanse the skin of oil and debris. We apply the peel with light strokes, sometimes doing multiple passes. As the solution begins to penetrate, you may experience a tingling sensation ranging from mild to intense depending on the strength of the peel. An application of soothing creams and sunscreen will complete the treatment. The entire procedure takes about 15-30 minutes.

After the post-peel flaking, many patients will comment that their skin feels smoother and looks brighter. Although you will likely see a difference after just one treatment, a series of 3-6 peels is ideal for maximum results. For patients who have more severe signs of aging, multiple treatments are recommended.

The chemical peels offered at LA SkinAesthetics

Micropeel

MicropeelThe SkinCeuticals Micropeel is a three-step clinical procedure that brightens dull, aged skin. By incorporating both manual and chemical exfoliation methods, you will get a deep, even peel to help combat signs of photoaging. Skin discoloration, fine lines and dullness will also be addressed.

How the Micropeel works
Micropeel is a medical-grade facial that attacks your concerns using several modalities. Skin impurities are sloughed away using a manual technique. This allows the alpha-hydroxy acid solution to penetrate deeper and stimulate cell turnover. The skin is then soothed with cryogenic therapy which reduces inflammation and further exfoliates the skin.

What to expect during your appointment
The skin is cleansed of makeup and lotions before we start the treatment. We will lightly dermaplane the skin as the first step to this procedure. This will feel like a very mild, rhythmic scratching of the skin. An application of the peel solution will follow. Some people may experience a slight tingling or itchy sensation. Your skin’s tolerance level will decide how many passes we do. Extractions can be done to further cleanse the pores. Finally, a very cold ball of specialized ice will be applied in a gentle, circular motion to close pores and alleviate redness. You’ll feel you skin instantly calm. A host of antioxidants and sunscreen will finish the treatment. The procedure takes about 60 minutes.

What to expect from the results
You will experience brighter, smoother skin for approximately 3-4 weeks after the treatment. Patients are advised to get 3-5 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart for best results. The time intervals between peels can be adjusted according to your specific skin type and level of desired aggression.

Micropeel Plus

The SkinCeuticals Micropeel Plus is specifically designed to help reduce acne and keep problematic skin from additional breakouts. This one-step medical-grade procedure uses a high percentage of salicylic acid to target acneic skin where it counts. This peel also helps with wrinkles and pigment irregularities. It is perfect for teenagers suffering from breakouts and older individuals with sun damage.

How the Micropeel Plus works
The Micropeel Plus utilizes two acids to achieve the best results. Glycolic acid is used to cut through the dead skin cells that lie on the surface of the skin while salicylic acid removes accumulated debris and oil in pores. Together, these acids help refine and smooth the skin at different epidermal depths.

What to expect during your appointment
We start by thoroughly cleansing the skin with the Clarisonic PRO brush and a degreasing agent. Dermaplaning is only performed on skin types deemed appropriate and for patients wanting a very aggressive treatment. The solution will be carefully layered onto the skin using light, sweeping strokes with a special applicator. A fan providing cool, breezy air will help reduce any stingy sensation that may arise. The treatment concludes with an application of sunscreen. The treatment lasts approximately 30 minutes.

What to expect from the results
Results typically last 3-4 weeks. After the conclusion of a series, however, results may last up to one year. Patients are generally asked to return for another peel every 4-6 weeks for a course of 5 treatments. This helps to keep the rate of acne breakouts to a minimum and also prevents sun damage from worsening.

Illuminize Peel®

Illuminize Peel®Produced by SkinMedica, this gentle peel uses a new generation of alpha-hydroxy acids in combination with three other acids to maximize skin rejuvenation with little irritation. It is best for mild skin concerns such as superficial lines, minor sun damage or for patients who simply want to restore the glow back into their skin.

How the Illuminize Peel® works
The key ingredients in the Illuminize peel are mandelic, malic and phytic acids in combination with salicylic acid and resorcinol. Together, they help to penetrate the top layer of the epidermis. Once those cells are sloughed off, the skin is left smoother in both tone and texture.

What to expect during your appointment
After thoroughly cleansing the skin, we will determine whether dermaplaning is necessary. We apply the peel with light strokes, sometimes doing multiple passes. You may experience a very mild tingling sensation but no irritation. We will send you home with detailed instructions and make sure we follow up with you afterwards. The entire procedure takes about 15-30 minutes.

What to expect from the results
The effects of glowing skin last for approximately 1-2 weeks after flaking, if any, has subsided. However, the benefits of the Illuminize peel will last much longer, especially when done in a series. Because of its superficial penetration, patients can get treated every 2-3 weeks for maximum results. A series of 3-5 treatments is a general recommendation to everyone.

Vitalize Peel®

This SkinMedica treatment is a medium-strength peel that uses a unique blend of AHAs, BHAs and resorcinol to help fight damage caused by the sun and aging. A proprietary retinol mixture creates deeper exfoliation than other peels of the same strength. This peel is best for patients with moderate skin imperfections. These include pigment irregularities, photodamage and uneven skin texture.

Vitalize Peel®

How the Vitalize Peel® works
The ingredients found in this peel are absorbed at a deeper level than very superficial peels. The added retinol solution further enhances the depth of penetration to help stimulate collagen production and epidermal thickening.

What to expect during your appointment
The skin is first cleansed before we decide if dermaplaning is a good pre-treatment for your skin type. Then the peel is applied using soft gauze, focusing on problem areas. We will follow with the retinol solution. During the application process, you may feel itchy or slight tingling. We can easily abate the sensation by administering some cool air to the skin. After we go over specific post-care instructions, we will schedule a follow-up visit in one week. Total treatment time is approximately 30 minutes.

What to expect from the results
The healthy, radiant skin that most patients experience immediately after a peel will last for several weeks. A peel series will ensure that your results last much longer. The Vitalize peel can be repeated every 3-4 weeks. We will discuss your concerns to determine how many treatments are needed to meet your ultimate goal.

Rejuvenize Peel™

This full-strength SkinMedica peel targets the deeper levels of the epidermis by using an advanced formulation of peeling agents. An additional retinol solution acts as a penetration enhancer to allow for a deeper exfoliation. Patients with moderate to severe skin concerns should consider this peel to improve acne scarring, even out discoloration and smooth rough texture.

How the Rejuvenize Peel™ works
Even though the Rejuvenize peel has the same ingredients as the milder Vitalize peel, the concentration of each ingredient is higher. Similarly, the included retinol mixture is more than double the strength of its sister peel. This all results in a more powerful, deeper treatment.

What to expect during your appointment
Cleansing the skin is always the first step. We continue with possible dermaplaning before applying the peel. More than one pass may be performed to ensure complete, concentrated coverage. The retinol solution is then lightly applied over the peel. Cool air eases some prickly sensations you may experience. Afterwards, we will discuss post-procedure instructions and schedule your 5-7 day follow-up visit. This treatment takes about 30 minutes to complete.

What to expect from the results
Many patients will comment that their skin feels smoother and looks brighter for many weeks after a treatment. For patients that have severe sun damage, multiple treatments are recommended. Although you will likely see a difference after just one treatment, a series of 3-6 peels is ideal for maximum results. The Rejuvenize Peel may be repeated every 4-6 weeks.

TCA Peel

TCA stands for trichloroacetic acid. For years, TCA has been considered the gold standard for medical-grade chemical peels. Its proven efficacy is well documented, and it is still used in many offices today. TCA peels are medium-depth treatments that can penetrate past the superficial epidermis into the deeper, upper dermis. This depth level is ideal for treating wrinkles, moderate to severe pigmentation and even skin conditions caused by the sun such as actinic keratoses.

TCA Peel before and after photos

How the TCA Peel works
TCA is a chemical cauterant, meaning it coagulates proteins in the skin. This is why many experience a white frosting immediately after the peel is applied. As the treated skin goes through controlled cell death, the cells will naturally slough off revealing fresh, new skin underneath.

What to expect during your appointment
Makeup and lotions are removed using our three-step cleansing process. A degreasing agent will further cleanse the skin of oil and debris. The TCA solution is then applied using broad, even strokes. Several passes may be applied for deeper penetration. As the skin begins to frost from the acid, you will experience a stinging sensation. To avoid the feeling from becoming too intense, we will use a fan to administer cool air onto the treated skin. An application of soothing creams and sunscreen will complete the treatment. The entire procedure takes about 30 minutes. Because multiple follow-up visits are required to ensure proper healing, all subsequent appointments will be made at this time.

What to expect from the results
Results from a TCA peel can last months, and if the skin is taken care of properly, even years. One TCA peel is usually sufficient to see great results. However, deep sun damage and wrinkles may take several treatments. Peels should be spaced at least 2-3 months apart.
